GREYSON CHANCE RETURNS WITH POWERFUL PIANO BALLAD “REARVIEW MIRROR”

Oklahoma born singer-songwriter Greyson Chance returns with a beautifully tender piano ballad titled ‘Rearview Mirror’. Showcasing the artist’s deeply powerful voice and vivid storytelling abilities to the highest degree, the song marks the starting point of a new era for the artist. Crafting a deeply personal brand of indie leaning pop music, Greyson is taking listeners on a journey from who he was, to who he is now.

Speaking on the release, Greyson Chance shares; “Writing Rearview Mirror has ultimately been a study in patience. I’ve made a lot of music in the past year, trying as an artist to make something that felt bigger than me, and I pushed myself a lot. It took a while to trust the process and to believe I could do it. Rearview Mirror is the first song to come of a very inward chapter in my career, and I am grateful now to have taken the time to make something I’m very

proud of.”

At his core, Greyson Chance is a storyteller, and one who approaches his craft with an author’s attention to detail. ‘Rearview Mirror’ is doused in a polished, refined quality that clearly demonstrates the artist’s strong sense of musical identity.

Today’s release follows Greyson’s third studio album ‘Palladium’, which garnered reputable support from areas such as PAPER and Rolling Stone, as well as gaining millions of streams online. Coming out of the other side of the pandemic with a sound crafted through months of soul searching, this music is Greyson’s best yet and indicative of the direction he is going in over the next few months.

PAPER MAGAZINE: It’s not the easiest task to completely understand where an artist is coming from, but Chance has found that winning formula for his music with purpose.’

Stay tuned for more music coming soon.

More on Greyson Chance…

At his core, Greyson Chance is a storyteller, and one who approaches his craft with an author’s attention to detail, and sense of artistry. The Oklahoma-born singer, songwriter, and pianist delves into metaphors and lyrical narratives that one would expect from a seasoned, mature songwriter, certainly not from a 26-year old.

The truth is, Chance is no novice when it comes to navigating the world of music, having been signed to Geffen Records at the age of 12, and experiencing his career erupt overnight. With this all occurring in the midst of his adolescent years, Chance’s presence in the industry quietened a few years later, as he switched to navigating this youth, and developing his talents from within.

In 2019 however, the musician resurfaced with his album portraits, which brought about a wave of acclaim and support for the artist’s work, leading his career into a positive state of resurrection, through the vibrant, hopeful sound of synthpop. The album to date has amassed 250 million streams, led Greyson to a sold-out international tour, and put him back on the map. He has since released two follow up albums in Trophies and Palladium. Now with ‘Rearview Mirror’, Greyson Chance is ready to write his next chapter.

When asked what is currently important to Chance as an artist, he speaks  emphatically about longevity. “I want to make music that ages well, songs that feel timeless and classic”. He laughs, “when I’ve been stuck on  something in the studio lately, I’ve been asking myself, “what would Joni  Mitchell do?”

This drive to create lasting songs is apparent within Chance’s most recent unreleased work. In an album inspired by his Oklahoma upbringing and a tragic fallout with his brother, Chance delivers lyrics that are absorbable but also challenge the listener to look inward. Take for example the opening line of his lead single, “if I had a rearview mirror, would I get to see you again?”

Sonically, Chance finds himself somewhere in-between the pop sensibility of Kacey Musgraves and the more obscure sounds of Perfume Genius. He shares how revisiting Bon Iver’s Blood Bank and The XX’s debut self-titled album helped him reconnect with his hunger for music, something that has ebbed and flowed with time. “I signed my first record deal around 14 years ago, yet I wake up and still feel like a brand new artist. I know people have opinions on who I am, how I got here, the decisions I’ve made… that’s all well and fine. Deep down I know that I’m just getting started”. With this fresh new outlook, there is still much more to embark on in his career, as he strides into 2024 with a sense of urgency.
